SOUNDCHECK featuring VÄLVĒ
Live at Soundcheck Devizes
Recorded on Saturday 17th June 2023
What is VÄLVĒ?
VÄLVĒ is a gleaming lo-fi/avant-guard/sound project. How about – folk lullabies re-imagined by the BBC Radiophonic
Workshop using found-sound collages and sometimes interrupted by Welsh language orations and sudden outbursts of glitch. Sonic workouts that
collapse into swirling dreamscapes of sax with tiny sounds opening out onto the epic. Hi-tech and no-tech, deployed with equal measures of
discipline and abandon. Carefully sculpted disorder. Uncanny geometries of noise and melody. Dizzy and gleeful and drawn in notebooks. That is VÄLVĒ.
VÄLVĒ started out as the outlet for composer/performer Chlöe Herington’s compositional work using text and image as the starting point for scores. She collects sounds and diagrams, composing predominantly for bassoon, saxes, electronics and found sounds to explore synaesthetic memory and collective experience.
They are currently performing in solo and duo (with Emma) form with the occasional guest performer. This performance is a Chlöe solo.
Notable performances include Cafe Oto, Supernormal Festival, Supersonic Festival, The Lexington and Hayward gallery and, more recently, a support slot with Pere Ubu.
Their album, ‘Geography’, was released by The State51 Conspiracy Records in Dec 2021. The next album will be released late 2023.
